The most common question new raw feeders ask is how much to put in the bowl. The good news is there's a simple rule of thumb that works for most dogs.
The basic rule for adult dogs
Most adult dogs eat around 2–3% of their ideal body weight in raw food per day, split over one or two meals.
- Lower energy, older or less active dogs: around 2%
- Average adult dogs: around 2.5%
- Very active or working dogs: around 3% or more
Worked examples
- 10kg dog at 2.5% = 250g per day (half a 500g pack)
- 20kg dog at 2.5% = 500g per day (one 500g pack)
- 30kg dog at 2.5% = 750g per day (one and a half packs)
That means a 10kg box (20 x 500g packs) lasts a 20kg dog around 20 days.
Feeding puppies
Puppies are growing fast and need more food for their size. A common guide is around 5–8% of their current body weight per day, split over three or four meals, reducing as they get older. Always check with your vet if you're unsure.
Adjust to your dog
These numbers are a starting point. Check your dog's body condition every couple of weeks. You should be able to feel the ribs easily without seeing them. If your dog is gaining weight, feed a little less. If they're losing weight, feed a little more.
