How to Store and Defrost Raw Dog Food Safely

Handling raw dog food safely is easy once you have a routine. Follow these simple rules to keep your dog and your family safe.

Storing frozen raw food

  • Keep raw dog food frozen at -18°C until you need it.
  • Store it separately from your own food where possible, or on the bottom shelf of the freezer.
  • Our 500g packs make it easy to take out only what you need.

How to defrost

The safest way is to defrost in the fridge overnight. Put the pack in a bowl or sealed container on the bottom shelf to catch any drips.

  • Don't defrost on the kitchen worktop at room temperature.
  • Don't defrost in the microwave, as it can partly cook the food and any bone content.
  • Once defrosted, keep it chilled and use within 24 hours.
  • Don't refreeze food that has been defrosted.

Hygiene tips

  • Wash your hands before and after handling raw food.
  • Clean bowls, utensils and surfaces with hot soapy water after each meal.
  • Pick up any uneaten food after 20–30 minutes.

Plan ahead

A simple habit helps: each evening, move the next day's pack from the freezer to the fridge. Not sure how many packs your dog needs? Use our raw dog food calculator.
