Switching your dog from kibble to raw food is easier than most people think. With a little planning, most dogs settle in within a week.
Start with one protein
Begin with a single, easy-to-digest protein such as raw chicken dog food. Once your dog is settled, you can introduce new proteins one at a time, like green tripe or beef heart.
A simple 7-day plan
- Days 1–2: 25% raw, 75% usual food
- Days 3–4: 50% raw, 50% usual food
- Days 5–6: 75% raw, 25% usual food
- Day 7: 100% raw
Some owners switch straight over in one go, which many dogs handle well. A gradual switch is gentler if your dog has a sensitive stomach.
What to expect
It's normal to see some changes as your dog adjusts. Stools often become smaller and firmer on raw food. If your dog has loose stools, slow the switch down and stay on one protein for longer.
Tips for fussy eaters
- Try green tripe. Its strong smell wins over most picky dogs.
- Serve the food cool rather than straight from the fridge.
- Take the bowl away after 15–20 minutes so your dog learns mealtimes.
How much to feed
Most adult dogs need around 2–3% of their ideal body weight per day. Use our raw dog food calculator to get your dog's daily amount.
If your dog has a health condition, speak to your vet before changing their diet.
